Logo Redesign Update

This is an update from the logo redesign team. We have now reviewed all of the responses from the survey, which closed on July 11, along with comments posted on Facebook and the blog. We are grateful for all of the constructive feedback and appreciative of our engaged and passionate New College community.

After a careful analysis of the survey comments, it is clear to us that while design “A” was the choice of a majority (54%) of respondents, it was the reluctant favorite, and we still have more work to do. We all want a logo that expresses the unique spirit and intellectual rigor of New College. We’re not about to compromise that objective.

Because of that, we have decided to step back and take more time to completely integrate your input. In other words, we have heard what you have said, and we are not pursuing any of the four designs you were shown. This is a complex undertaking, and we recognize it’s a very big decision. Thank you again for taking the time to be part of the process. We will keep you posted.

We Hear You!

Hello from the logo redesign team. We appreciate the feedback and are in the process of reviewing all of the comments we've received via this blog, as well as through the College's social media channels and those of the alumnae/i association and student forum. We are also in the process of reviewing the preliminary results of the logo redesign survey, which currently includes more than 1,300 responses from students, prospective students, alumnae/i, faculty, staff and others who are interested in New College. At present, that survey indicates a majority of votes favoring design "A" or some modification of that design. Within the coming few days we will begin the process of incorporating your ideas and suggestions into revised designs and an updated survey to see if we can address some of the issues you have raised. As we do so, we look forward to your continued feedback and comments, and encourage you to please remember that while all comments are welcome and worthy of consideration, the ethos and spirit of New College are to be respectful and to offer criticism in a constructive fashion. Many thanks!

Why We're Changing the Logo

The current logo, which was adopted in 2001 after New College regained its independence, has several design flaws that make it difficult to read in print and in digital media. For example, the varying font sizes within the logo and the fine line screen in the Four Winds seal when used alongside the logo blur together and become illegible when the logo is reproduced in a small size.

And the timing is right. …

New signage has been installed on campus as part of the Campus Master Plan approved by the Board of Trustees in 2008. For this purpose the original Four Winds seal was redesigned to be read well at greater distances. We hope to integrate the look of this new on-campus signage with the look of a new logo.

And the Office of Admissions is getting ready to update materials for prospective students, including new admissions materials, web features and videos currently being developed. It is the fact that these materials are scheduled for production this summer, with an expected shelf life of 3-4 years, that makes the logo redesign project particularly time sensitive.

A Little Logo History

As we get started, we thought it might be fun to take a look at some past logos used since New College's founding in 1960.

Welcome

We're glad you found us.

New College of Florida wants your feedback as we redesign the College’s logo. We'll use this blog for comments and feedback as well as to keep you informed about the latest in the redesign process. Currently our logo is used in two versions shown below, one with the Four Winds seal and one without. It is important to note that the Four Winds seal will NOT be redesigned. It will continue to be used in a number of official capacities.
